Outdoor Stairlifts in Southern California: Buyer's Guide
For many Southern California homes, the hardest stairs are outside: the front steps, the stairs down to the yard or a long staircase on a hillside lot. An outdoor stairlift makes those stairs safe so you can keep coming and going on your own. At Stairlift Masters we install outdoor stairlifts across Southern California, and this guide explains how to choose one.
What is an outdoor stairlift?
An outdoor stairlift is a stairlift built to stay outside all year. It uses weather-resistant materials, sealed controls and a protective cover, so sun, dust and rain do not damage the chair or the rail.
Key features to look for
Weather-resistant rail and motor housing made for outdoor use.
Protective cover that shields the chair when it is parked.
Sealed controls that keep moisture out of the electronics.
UV-resistant upholstery that holds up to strong Southern California sun.
Battery power that keeps the lift running during an outage.
Local service, because outdoor lifts work harder than indoor ones.
Outdoor stairlift models we install
For straight outdoor stairs we install the Access HomeGlide outdoor model. For outdoor stairs that turn or have landings, we install the Harmar Helix, built on a custom curved rail.
How outdoor stairlift installation works
Free in-home assessment. We measure the outdoor stairs and check the surface the rail will mount to.
Model selection. We choose a straight or curved outdoor model to fit the stairs.
Installation day. The rail mounts to the steps, and we confirm the cover and controls work.
Training. We show the rider and family how to use, cover and charge the lift.
Outdoor stairlift vs. porch lift
An outdoor stairlift is for someone who can sit, stand and transfer on their own. If the rider uses a wheelchair or cannot transfer safely, a vertical platform lift (porch lift) is the better choice, because the rider stays in the wheelchair the whole time.
Frequently asked questions
Can an outdoor stairlift stay outside all year? Yes. It is built for outdoor use, and the cover protects it when parked.
Does the heat or sun damage it? Outdoor models use UV-resistant materials; keeping the cover on adds protection.
Can outdoor stairs with a turn get a stairlift? Yes. A curved outdoor model like the Harmar Helix follows turns and landings.
